When a new city ordinance passed allowing local businesses to extend their patios beyond ten feet, my phone rang almost immediately. A Dilworth neighborhood dive bar called with what seemed like a straightforward request: “We need a mural on the new fence and a little help with patio furniture.”
At first glance, it sounded simple enough—a 40-foot-long stretch tucked between two buildings, ending with a brand-new fence. But as the owner began describing the goals—creating a branded backdrop for photos, optimizing group seating, and making the space a hidden gem—I could already sense that what they were asking for wasn’t quite what they actually needed.
That moment—where I hear the gap between what’s being requested and what’s truly desired—is where the magic of collaboration begins.
As a designer, my role isn’t just to execute what’s asked. It’s to listen deeply—to the client’s vision, to the space itself, to the people who will fill it—and to translate those insights into something that elevates both experience and brand. After walking the site, I realized the original plan would underdeliver. A single mural at the back of a narrow patio wouldn’t make the visual or emotional impact they were hoping for.
So I proposed something unexpected: What if we reimagined the entire space instead of focusing on one wall?
Rather than investing all the budget into an intricate mural, I suggested an abstract design to create a cohesive atmosphere—one that wrapped the space in energy and intention to align with the bar’s vibe. The design would still include a photo-worthy backdrop, but now every wall would contribute to the story.
For seating, we scrapped the idea of replacing everything new. Instead, we sourced mix-and-match pieces from Facebook Marketplace, unified with weatherproof black paint for a cohesive aesthetic. String bulb lights overhead would soften the space, transforming it from a simple outdoor area into an inviting, versatile patio perfect for groups of four to six.
In the end, we didn’t just paint a fence—we transformed a forgotten “smoke space” into a memorable destination. The final design met every practical need, fit the budget, and went beyond what the client imagined possible.
