From Awkward Corners to a Retro Dream: A Teen Room Designed to Grow

Davenport, IA

Every space tells a story, and this one began with a challenge—an oddly shaped room with uneven light and tricky proportions. My task: transform it into a space that felt both grounded and full of personality, a room that could evolve through the changing rhythm of adolescence.

The layout required thoughtful strategy to honor both feng shui principles and function. With the bed positioned in the command spot—facing the door but never directly aligned—I needed to maintain a solid backing without blocking the room’s best source of natural light.

The solution came through a custom-built bed frame and headboard designed specifically for the space.

She’d asked for a bench, but I saw an opportunity to take it further. I designed a bed that wrapped into a built-in bench, extending seamlessly to each side table. This form not only created cozy seating but also preserved easy access to under-bed storage—a practical necessity disguised as an aesthetic feature. Hidden along the frame, vibe lighting allows for color-changing moods, a playful nod to teenage self-expression.

The color palette carries a retro spirit—funky yet refined, with muted tones that will mature gracefully over time. Across from the bed, I painted subtle geometric shapes in complementary hues to bring rhythm and visual movement to the walls.

The room’s unique curve became another opportunity for custom craftsmanship: built-in shelving and a study desk, perfectly tailored to fit the architecture. While I don’t usually advocate for studying where one sleeps, this layout reflected a creative balance between function and flow—meeting the client’s needs without compromising intention.

To complete the transformation, I replaced the dated ceiling fan with a sleek, modern fixture—metal accents and clear blades that bring in the metal element while keeping the room feeling open and airy.

The final result? A once-awkward room transformed into a soulful, multi-functional retreat—equal parts cozy, creative, and confidently hers. A retro dream with room to grow.
